The History of Cross Country Skiing and its Presence in Andorra: Discover JormaSki
Cross-country skiing is one of the oldest and most fascinating disciplines in the world of winter sports. Born out of the need to move through snowy terrains, this sport developed in the late 19th century and has remained relevant to this day, being a complete physical activity accessible to everyone. At JormaSki, in Andorra, we are passionate about cross-country skiing and want to share with you the history and opportunities our country offers to enjoy this sport.
Origins of Cross-Country Skiing
For centuries, skis were an essential tool in the snowy northern regions for hunting and collecting firewood during the winter. The long distances between isolated communities and harsh winters made skiing a crucial means to maintain social contact. The word "ski" comes from the Old Norse "skid," which means a piece of wood split in half.
Evolution and Competition
Cross-country skiing began to develop as a sport in the late 19th century. Norwegian soldiers were already skiing for sport in the 18th century, and the first documented race dates back to 1842 in Norway. The famous Holmenkollen Ski Festival began in 1892, and by 1901 it included a dedicated cross-country race. Since then, this sport has traditionally been dominated by Nordic countries.
Cross-Country Skiing in Andorra
While Andorra is globally known for its alpine ski resorts such as Grandvalira, Ordino Arcalís, and Pal Arinsal, it is also an ideal destination for cross-country skiing. It began in 1994 with the La Rabassa Snowfield, featuring the first 5 km of cross-country ski trails. Between 1995 and 1996, La Rabassa expanded with 10 additional kilometers of trails and facilities such as the station's "chalet." Today, La Rabassa has been renamed Naturland. Located in Sant Julià de Lòria, Naturland features 15 km of trails specially designed for this modality, with four circuits varying in difficulty for all levels.
